SENIOR DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
The Development Director is responsible for creating the fundraising strategy, including individual giving, corporate partnerships, foundation giving, and supporting communications, including website, emails, and social media engagement. The Development Director will participate in creating an organizational and fundraising culture. The Senior Development Director will lead the process to define our long-term fundraising strategy to grow annual fundraising from the current $2.8M.
The ideal candidate is:
- Self-motivated, resourceful, creative and strategic thinker, comfortable working independently and with others to coordinate (or lead) a team approach to fund development;
- Knowledgeable of the girl-serving network and experienced with our donor community;
- Possesses leadership experience and demonstrates strong leadership skills, including initiative, strategic vision, collaboration and understanding of what it takes to build and manage successful teams;
- Experienced fundraising with individuals, corporations, and foundations;
- Experienced in communications, and storytelling across media;
- Experienced in overseeing fundraising and communications across media;
- Able to take organizational ambiguity and turn it into an action plan with desired outcomes, benchmarks, deadlines;
- Possess a drive to make things happen while maintaining flexibility and a sense of humor;
- Demonstrates social and emotional intelligence, and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion;
Responsibilities:
Organizational Leadership (10%)
- Manage the Development and Administrative Manager, including maintaining communication and recordkeeping with donors, overseeing development data hygiene and dashboard production, administrative support with technology and events, and pipeline research, and moves management.
- Support the Regional Directors with their fundraising efforts, including operational process, strategic support, collateral development, grant writing process and support with board communications and events
- Train and coach the development and communications staff, Board, volunteers, other staff and committees on fundraising activities
- Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the organization’s values, vision, and mission.
- Represent Girls Leadership locally, regionally and nationally, both internally and externally.
Fundraising (70%)
- Fundraising Strategy and Execution

- Build a major and principal gift strategy, growing annual revenue by 20% over the next three years.
- Develop a Regional Fundraising Strategy and support the Regional Directors with execution.
- Manage, cultivate, and steward a portfolio of 30 major funders and oversee moves management for other portfolios across the organization.
- Provide leadership and coordination for all development activities including major gifts, annual campaign, endowment, foundations and corporate giving and special events.
- Represent and articulate Girls Leadership’s mission and programs to its potential constituents, members and supporters. Foster innovation through collaboration and forward thinking.
- Oversee the bi-coastal annual fundraising events, with support from event management support and Regional Directors.
- Support co-CEO fundraising activities in collaboration with Regional Directors and the Development Associate.
- Board Relations

- Assist the co-CEO in participating in the board’s fundraising committee and designing the board’s fund development strategy, targets, and approaches.
- Coordinate the annual fundraising activities of the board, including events, campaigns, corporate partnerships, and donor stewardship.
- Support board and volunteer fundraising efforts with the development of playbooks and collateral materials, as well as fundraising coaching and training for volunteers.

- Fundraising Operations

- Oversee and coordinate the grant writing process, including writing grants with the support of the team.
- Manage the operations development function efficiently, including oversight of development functions in SalesForce.
- Oversee prospect research.
- Maintain accountability for the fundraising team and ensure compliance with all regulations and laws, as well as the code of ethics for fundraising professionals.
- Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy of the fund development program.
Communications (20%)
- Plan development communications in partnership with the marketing team.
- Support and coordinate with the marketing and communications team, including support with PR, social media, email and website development (3 people).
Skills Required:
- Development/Fundraising: 3-5 years of experience leading fundraising teams and raising between $1M-$5M in yearly revenue. Success fundraising from multiple donor channels.
- Project Management: Experience in planning, leading, and managing fund development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to Co-CEOs/Board of Directors
- Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones
- Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences
- Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives
- Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally
Compensation & Benefits: This is a full-time exempt position. Starting salary is $120,000. Benefits include health insurance, optional dental/vision, unlimited paid time off with supervisor pre-approval, separate sick time, 11 holidays per year, and a 401(k) plan with employer contribution available after one year of service. All positions at Girls Leadership work a hybrid model. In-person work is 2 1/2 days per week in the office at Mills College in Oakland.
