Engaging in social-emotional learning enables youth to better understand themselves and others while navigating relationships and experiences in the world, but many educators tell us that social and emotional learning (SEL) isn’t working, especially for the most marginalized students. This is why this workshop teaches how to center gender and racial equity in SEL. We see that when SEL or leadership education is designed to work for the most marginalized students, it becomes better for all students. The joy of this two-hour workshop is that we build our own brave space to foster relational trust and access the vulnerability and leadership that we envision for all our youth.
Included in the training are four lessons you can use right away to nurture warm and authentic partnerships with youth and center gender and racial equity in SEL:
- Three Minute Know Me: Exploring identity through voice and choice to build understanding in pairs, small groups, or the whole group
- Emotions Stations: A game to identify feelings in different situations
- Friendship Values: Naming and prioritizing values in healthy relationships
- Name that Style: Understanding conflict styles, and the benefits and challenges of different approaches
Participants will:
- Build a foundational understanding of SEL while gathering best practices for integrating gender and culturally-responsive practices
- Examine our own social-emotional capacities as professional adults, and our inevitable areas of growth
- Assess how our identities impact how we view ourselves, interact with others, and shape our values
- Gain skills and tools for modeling emotional intelligence for all youth
Size is limited to 30 participants.

“So far, this has been the best workshop I have been to. Why? Because they made it safe; gave us data and taught us important concepts through visual & auditory tools; had us reflect; was interactive and gave us tangible lessons to implement in our work environment. Hit all markers! Thank you”

“Just a quick note to thank you for the opportunity to attend the training session with you all. I appreciate you all taking the time to put this together and sharing your wisdom with us. I know that these [workshops] can be difficult to do over zoom, however, you all did an amazing job and we got so much out of it. I’m happy to say that I have already put some of it to practice, so again thank you for sharing this with us, including all of the resources.”
