Partnering with Alameda County School District to Use SEL as a Lever for Equity

Girls Leadership works with districts, public schools, charters, independent schools and community-based organizations across the country and internationally. Learn how we partnered with two departments in the Alameda County Office of Education to teach how SEL can be used as a lever for racial and gender equity.

 


Department of Special Programs

The Need:

Alameda County was looking for gender and racial equity strategies to support Educators in providing culturally responsive practices for their students who have been moved out of traditional classrooms.

 

The Support:

Girls Leadership offered several professional development programs to meet their needs, including…

  • Bringing Gender and Racial Equity to Social Emotional Learning
  • Compassion Fatigue Workshop
  • A keynote address at their Mental Health conference

 

The Outcomes:

Workshop participants…

☑️ Explored the impact of Social and Emotional Learning and gender and racial bias on girls’ leadership development, especially girls of color.
☑️ Reviewed, examined, and created a plan for how to address and interrupt implicit, explicit, and appropriated biases in themselves and their teams.
☑️ Understood the difference between Compassion Fatigue and Burnout, and unpacked how they carry the burden of listening to or experiencing others’ trauma.

“Compassion fatigue [was most impactful] because as educators we tend to sympathize with our students and trying not to let that affect you is a learned skill. As an organization, more wrap-around services are needed not only for students but also for teaching staff servicing them.”


Department of Social Emotional Learning

The Need:

Their newly formed department was looking for guidance and expertise on building out their social and emotional services and model to support gender and racial equity.

 

The Support:

Girls Leadership provided professional development focused on two modules that addressed their needs.

  • Bias Intervention Workshop
  • Compassion Fatigue Workshop

 

The Outcomes:

Workshop participants…

☑️ Reviewed and deepened understanding of their own personal and institutional biases and agreed upon an approach to interrupt this bias when it shows up.
☑️ Identified coping mechanisms and strategies to mitigate the effects of compassion fatigue.
☑️ Devised a plan for systemic changes that will address the root causes of compassion fatigue and create more support.
☑️ Learned how to co-create a healing-centered environment with students.
