We are kicking off the summer at Bryn Mawr College and bracing ourselves for the 85 middle school girls arriving on Saturday. The excitement is palpable as we decorate the dorms, practice our workshop activities, and even do a dress rehearsal of July 4 festivities, water balloons and all! Before we get too wrapped up in the joy of camp, we want to recognize the accomplishments of this past year. GLI reached over 3,600 participants, including girls, parents, and professionals. Our 16 educators ran 99 programs in six states, from day camps to parent and daughter workshops to professional development training.

GLI Alumna Petitions for a Female Moderator of the Presidential Debates!
says GLI 2011 Alumna Elena Tsemberis. This year Elena learned that there hasn’t been a female moderator of a presidential debate for 20 years! She and her friends decided not only that was this wrong, but that they wanted to do something about it. Elena’s petition to the Commission on Presidential Debates to select a woman to moderate the upcoming 2012 debates has received over 100,000 signatures. This Month’s Girl Find: A Mighty Girl

To Do: Play
Summer is the season to let go, pause the busyness of the year, and be with your family. Take advantage of the season and play with your daughter; don’t just play board games or Wii, but have a dance party, play charades, or sing in the car. Girls are often socialized to want to be liked and to please others. In this search for approval, they learn to constantly ask themselves what others are thinking about them, whether they look good enough, or whether they are saying or doing the “right” thing. These questions keep girls from following their instincts or being true to themselves. When we truly play, we let go of our paralyzing concern about other people’s opinions. We challenge you to let go of that same concern and let yourself dork out. Bonus points if your daughter tells you that you are totally embarrassing. |
