We are launching the Book Club pilot year with 2nd and 3rd grade* girls in mind. We’ll develop the book list and talking points for the specific concerns and abilities of girls at that age level. (Go here if you’re not signed up for Book Club.)

Know of a great book that should be on our list?

The first order of business for the #StrongerTogether Book Club is to select amazing books, and we want your input. We are looking for well-written, engaging books on a 2nd – 3rd grade reading level. The books should feature diverse female characters dealing with issues such as speaking up for one’s self, apologies and forgiveness, overcoming adversity, embracing differences, and dealing with conflict.

We’re considering:

Let’s put our heads together and think up the best book list ever.

Please leave your ideas in the comments!

*If your daughter is in another grade, do still sign up for our pilot. You’ll receive emails with valuable tips about running a book club and parenting resources. And, you’ll be the first to know when we expand our Parent & Daughter Book Club to other ages.

  1. Brooke Conway

Where can I (see Birthdays) it was mentioned under a note on inclusivity?

    • Dorothy Ponton, Community Engagement Manager

      Hi Brooke,

Thanks for your question: that could be more clear! I believe the author meant that kids’ Birthday parties usually include everyone. I’ll ask her and let you know for sure.

  2. Anneka Fagundes

A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon is a good one! Great for encouraging conversations around how to be yourself and not worry what everyone else thinks of you.

  3. Janet Bias

Anything from A Mighty Girl website would be a great choice! They are all about empowering girls. =)

  4. Elisa Merrifield

Wonder by RJ Palacio is an incredible book which has all of the attributes you list except the main character is not female. My daughter has never been so moved by a book. It is more appropriate for 3/4 grade.

  5. Hilary Moore

Would be delighted if you would consider my books, which sound perfectly suited for what you are looking for! The series is called “Brave Strong Girls” – the first three are released this September – all with gorgeous illustrations and brave, strong girl characters. All profits go to Girl education and empowerment charities. The language in the books is beautiful and appropriate for ages 7-9. Titles released in September are: “Brave, Strong Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (Snow White uses her initiative and courage to outwit her evil Step Father), “Brave, Strong Leonie and the Race of a Lifetime” (Leonie insists on competing in the all-boys’ pony race and wins!) and “The Brave, Strong Mermaid” (The mermaid refuses to give up her voice and decides to stay in the ocean with her fellow mermaids!) I think your readers would love them! All best wishes, Hilary Moore
