Bias Intervention Professional Development Workshop
While our biases show up everywhere in education and youth development, perhaps nowhere does this bias have more impact than in spaces where character development and social-emotional skills are taught. In order to bring the power of wellness, confidence, health relationships and leadership to all young people, especially the most marginalized, it is essential that we reflect on our biases without shame, and develop the skills to interrupt them with grace and support. By identifying and interrupting patterns of bias in ourselves and the environments we create, participants will learn to model emotional intelligence, vulnerability, and leadership for all our youth.
In this workshop participants will:
- Take a deep dive into our research on the role of educators in leadership development in youth through the lens of gender and racial equity
- Learn to define and identify different forms of bias (implicit, explicit, and appropriated)
- Gain tools to examine, address, and interrupt bias in ourselves and our practice
Included in the training are four lessons you can use – or share with others – right away to engage more authentically and build trust with your youth:
- If You Really Knew Me: An activity to help you practice modeling vulnerability for and developing a curious mindset towards your peers and youth
- Pin the Veil: Noticing microagressions and uncovering their layered meanings
- Identity Canvas: Exploring and sharing the many facets making up one’s identity
- Now You See me: Reclaiming and rewriting the narrative surrounding one’s identity

Taught by Girls Leadership’s Program Managers, Regional Program Directors, Senior Director of Research & Sports Power Lab, and Chief Program Officer, this Bias Intervention Professional Development Workshop is a two-hour interactive virtual workshop designed for teachers, program staff, counselors, and administrators who work with girls in grades 5-12.
