Girls Leadership Institute (GLI) Description:
GLI teaches girls tools for assertive self-expression, emotional intelligence, and healthy relationships for a life of authentic leadership. Our programs include parent-daughter workshops, day camps, a residential summer program, professional development trainings for educators, parent education presentations, and after-school classes.
Program Description:
GLI seeks an experienced Nurse to work at its residential summer program at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, from June 21 – August 12, 2014. GLI summer program is divided into two, three-week sessions, serving girls in grades six through twelve (sixth graders attend for a ten-day session).
The Health Manager will oversee health care, supervise health protocol, partner with staff, and provide direct health service to GLI girls and staff.
The Health Manager receives one day off every 7-8 days and two days off in between sessions. Working as a member of the GLI staff is a unique, exciting and demanding opportunity. Creating the GLI community requires hard work, long hours, and significant commitment. Staff must maintain a high level of energy, patience, professionalism, and compassion from early morning wake-up to evening staff meetings. This intense work schedule requires stamina and dedication. The result is an incredibly rewarding job transforming the lives of adolescent girls.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work with staff and GLI families to collect, organize, and inventory medication on the first day of the program, and return medications to families at the end of the season
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized infirmary
- Distribute medication at 7:30 am and 9:45 pm daily (as well as other times through out the day)
- Offer “office hours” from 12:30 – 1:30 four days a week
- Respond to injuries and urgent care as needed
- Establish and follow appropriate medical protocols, including maintaining a health log, disposing of medical waste, practicing precautions for infection control and storing medication
- Post hours for daily medication disposal and “health call”
- Make appointments, when necessary, with medical/dental personnel in the community and accompany girls to the appointment
- Maintain first-aid kits and ensure their distribution for off-campus trips
- Develop and lead staff training pertaining to health and safety rules
- Be CPR and First Aid certified
- Monitor the health of all staff
- Communicate girls health issues daily
- Coordinate medication distribution and injury response during time off
- Engage in five full days of staff training at Mount Holyoke College, June 22 – 26
- Engage in two full days of staff evaluation at Mount Holyoke College, August 11 & 12

Qualifications
Candidates must be at least 25 years of age and have at least one year of experience as a Nurse or EMT. Professionals with a state-nursing license are preferred, but all applicants should apply.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have experience providing health care for youth
- Be able to connect and relate well with girls in grades 6-12
- Have the ability to remain flexible and patient in the face of time pressure and multiple demands
- Have a strong ability to ease health related anxiety
- Have a current and valid drivers license
- Engage excellent communication skills
- Have current CPR and First Aid certification
- Work well with others as part of a team
- Be comfortable with professional observation and regular feedback
- Approach problems calmly, creatively and proactively
- Be excited to be part of a summer program community
Compensation:
- $5,250 for seven weeks of summer program inclusive of staff training, June 21 – August 12, 2014
- Room and board at Mount Holyoke College for June 21 – August 12, 2014
- Total travel reimbursement, for arriving to campus in June and leaving in August, is up to $200 if traveling beyond a 150 mile radius from Mount Holyoke College
- Upon arrival only, GLI will pick up staff arriving to Bradley International Airport, Amherst Bus Stop and Springfield Amtrak station. GLI is not able to accommodate transportation after the summer due to limited vehicle access.
