Laura Loomis is a Colorado native who is passionate about equipping young people to change the world. She studied secondary English education at the University of Northern Colorado and also completed a semester abroad in England and a Spanish immersion program in Costa Rica. She went on to a successful career as a middle school English teacher. She championed authenticity, critical thinking, and helping students discover and use their voices. She often had the privilege of observing the moment when a student would recognize the power of individual leadership as a means of improving the world. These moments came in classroom discussions, as she coached basketball and cross country, and while chaperoning humanitarian trips to Juarez, Mexico as well as educational trips to Washington, DC. When she became a mother, these passions became all the more personal. The awesome responsibility of raising children prompted her to read, research, and fervently seek alternatives to cultural pressures surrounding parenting and identity formation. She is thrilled to be part of the inspired work of Girls Leadership and loves the opportunity it gives her to combine her experience and talents with her passion to empower people. Laura currently works at an elementary school as an assessment coordinator and a substitute teacher. She enjoys running, hiking, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. She also strives to do a bit of world changing each day.
